Hi Folks,
This is just a little note to let you know about an acupuncture treatment technique i have developed and am now offering called Quick Release Acupuncture.
Quick Release Acupunctures brings fast and effective relaxation to tense back, neck and shoulder muscles and helps to restore balance to the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. The technique uses very specific and powerful release points for a short time (20-30 mins) on the back to create deep relaxation.
I am offering The Quick Release treatment for $50/session (for a limited time). You can simply take a look at my Online Schedule and find a 1/2 hour time that works best for you.
FYI this would not be a good replacement for the typical five element acupuncture sessions as It is a more specific treatment for the symptoms above.
Wishing you and yours a happy, healthy and whole new year!
with lots of love,
Lance

Winter 2010
Hi Beautiful Beings,
Happy Winter Solstice!
In nature winter is a time of quiet, stillness, and rejuvenation (a bit different than our holiday time ey?). The days are short and the nights long and dark. Animals are hibernating and surviving on little food. The trees have lost their leaves and have moved their energy (qi) deep down into the roots and core. Bulbs and seeds are beneath the earth in their dormant cycle waiting for the springtime's message of new life.
In our busy, modern, technological lives we often forget that we too are part of nature. We too have Winter energy that courses through us. In Five Element Medicine we call this kind of energy the Water Element. This energy creates our ability to rest, it gives us time and space for rejuvenation and builds our potential energy so that in Spring we can explode with new life just like the trees.
Emotionally, this phase of energy gives us our sense of power and will. It shows up as the emotions of Courage and Fear. Water represents our deep reserves of energy, our will to survive, and a trust in the universe. This energy also gives us the ability to move, flow, transform and change, just as water does on the Earth.
Physically, Water shows up as our Kidneys, The creator of energy and power in the body; and the Bladder, the reserves of this energy.
Spiritually, the Water energy gives us the ability to be still and quiet down. It gives us an opportunity to rest and rejuvenate so that, when needed, our energy will be abundant. Water gives us the will power and endurance to go through tough times with courage and the trust that everything will be okay.
In Five Element Medicine the goal is to keep the energy moving through this natural cycle of seasons. When it gets stuck thats when dis-ease, pain or upset occur. When the Water Element is out of balance you may feel excessive fear or a struggle to survive. You may experience low energy, deep fatigue, exhaustion, reduced sex drive, lack of trust and timidity. You may have kidney or bladder problems. hypertension, infertility and back pain.
When Water is in balance you have the gifts of wisdom, stillness, patience, potency, listening, and appropriate fear.
If you are really struggleing with this time of year remember that darkness is the place of growth. It is from a dark womb that we grow, the dark soil that our food grows and the dark places of our soul that we must travel through in order to grow as a person. This time of year provides the opportunity to nestle into that darkness and find the places that need a little bit of light shed on them. Its important to be patient and willing in this darkness, knowing that light will come! Light returns! As you may have had the opportunity to see last night, the Lunar eclipse was a profound example of how the shadow is inescapable, all consuming and FLEETING! If you're having a hard time, help yourself out by taking time for YOU. Hang in there, you'll make it through to a most magnificent spring.
If your Winter energy or Water element is feeling stuck here are a few practices that can help! Pick a couple and put them to action for this week and notice how it feels!
- SLOW DOWN! We live in fast paced times. Sometimes its too fast for our nervous systems and we get overwealmed, stress out. Take advantage of the Winter Stillness and slow life down where you can. For this week, practice Slowness....driving slower, talk slower, move slower, eat slower, text slower =). notice what effect slowing down has on your life. Does it change your level of stress? If so think about it as a tool that can assist you when life is just too fast or too much!
- MEDITATE Meditation gives us an awareness into ourselves like no other practice. Meditation can give us more space and more time and it can bring us to a deep balance like nothing else. Click Here for a simple Kundalini Yoga Meditation to totally recharge you. Try it and let me us know how you feel afterwards!

Hi Beautiful Beings,
Are you ready to delve into the Autumn?
The crisp, clean, cool air brushes across my nostrils and deeply penetrates my lungs - WOW!. My eyes widen as the rich golden afternoon light touches the bold ochre, brilliant yellow, and deep red of the fallen leaves littered across the forest floor- Ahhhh! My ears pick up the sounds of busy rustles, gentle afternoon chirps, and the random splashes of my dog, Nimbus, as he jumps in and out of the cold, spring-fed creek - Ohh! This was my Autumn today. What was yours?
There is a special kind of reflective feeling that the Fall offers us. In many traditions, including the Taoist Chinese and Jewish, Fall is the time when the heavens and earth are closest together. A time when we can almost touch the spirit world, a time of deepest connection to our ancestors, those we have lost, those who have come before us. The Fall offers us a powerful opportunity to deeply grieve that which and those who we have lost and also offers us space to give thanks and praise for that which and those who are currently in our life.
In Nature, Autumn grants the opportunity to shed what is no longer absolutely essential. The energy (qi) of our brothers and sisters of the plant world, turns inward and descends deep down into their roots, thus their leaves fall to the ground creating rich fertilizer for the future generations. The descent of Qi also allows for rest and rejuvenation during the upcoming Winter months and this stillness, in turn, creates a powerful potential energy that is explosively released with the crack of Springtime.
In our busy, modern, technological lives we often forget that we too are part of nature. We too have Autumn energy that courses through us. In Five Element Medicine we call this kind of energy the Metal Element. This energy creates our ability to let go of what no longer serves so that we can make room for rest, rejuvenation and eventually our own new power and possibilities.
Emotionally, this phase of energy gives us our sense of self-worth, vitality and resolve. It shows up as our grief, our praise and our sense of awe.
Physically, Metal shows up as our Lungs, the part of us that takes in vital energy oxygen and lets go of the waste carbon dioxide. It also shows up as our Large Intestine, which both lets go of our rubbish and also intakes the last remains of any essential nutrients. Spiritually, the Metal energy gives us the ability to let go, reflect and create space. It offers us the chance to get in touch with our spiritual energy and realize our core values. Metal reminds us of the heavens and our connection to our higher self.
In Five Element Medicine the goal is to keep the energy moving through this natural cycle of seasons. When it gets stuck thats when dis-ease, pain or upset occur. When Metal is out of balance you may feel excessive grief, deep depression, low self-esteem, low self-worth, emotional withdrawal and excessive materialism. You may not be able to recover from a loss or be inspired. You may have difficulty breathing, unhealthy skin or bowel issues.
When Metal is in balance you have the gifts of awe, letting go, acknowledgment, respect, inspiration, preciousness and acceptance.
If your Fall energy or Metal element is feeling stuck here are a few practices that can help! Pick a couple and put them to action for this week and notice how it feels!
- BREATHE! Go outside, preferably in a natural setting, and allow your lungs to INSPIRE! Sit on a log, a rock or the earth and breathe in and out through the nose slowly and deeply for 11 minutes. As you inhale focus on bringing in that which you desire and as you exhale focus on letting go of that which no longer serves you.
- POOP! Sorry if I grossed you out =) In Five Element Acupuncture the best time to poop is 5-7 am, when your Qi is focused in the Large Intestines. So for a week create some time between 5 and 7, wake up early if you need to....Find a good book, magazine or just meditate and LET GO! Give yourself plenty of time - at least 11 minutes, no need to rush these things. p.s. This is a particularly good homework for those who have troubles in this area...Extra Credit goes to those who go outside, dig a hole and squat =)
- CLEAN HOUSE! You've heard of spring cleaning...now try fall cleaning! Go through your old stuff and get rid of that which you no longer want or need. Those clothes that are too big for you now that you've lost all that weight, those keepsakes from the 3rd grade, that piece of furniture you hate...Whatever... create space in your home = create space in your life! There are plenty of places that will accept donations or check out www.freecycle.com

Hi Beautiful Beings,
I hope you are having an abundant Late Summer!
Us wacky acupuncturists like to mix things up a bit. Instead of our usual 4 seasons we throw in this extra one...! Late Summer is what we also call Indian Summer, when the days get a bit shorter, the sunlight is a bit cooler, the air humid and best of all our delicious garden veggies and fruit are overflowing! The intense growth of spring ( wood element) and the busyness of Summer (fire element) has led to abundance in Late Summer (earth element)! The Earth energy is all about the giving and recieving of nourishment and care...if you think about it..we get EVERYTHING from our mama Earth!
In us the energetic movement of Late Summer creates our ability to receive and give care, nurturing, empathy and compassion. Its the ability to nourish those around us with the essence of who we are. A mama breastfeeding is the perfect example of Earth energy in action.
In 5 element medicine the goal is to keep the energy moving through this natural cycle of seasons. When it gets stuck thats when dis-ease, pain or upset occur. When the nurturing Late Summer energy (EARTH element) within us gets out of balance you may feel obsessive worry or sympathy. You may be self-centered or insecure. You may not be able to give or receive help or care from others. You may feel a lack of abundance, like you dont have enough. You may experience, muscle pain, digestive problems, ulcers, headaches or even cancer. You may also find it hard to lose or gain weight.
When Earth Energy is in balance you have the gifts of nurturing, thoughtfulness, nourishment, taste, sympathy, stability and home.
If your Late Summer energy or Earth element is feeling stuck here are a few practices that can help! Pick a couple and put them to action for this week and notice how it feels!
- GIVE! Lend a helping hand to a neighbor in need; give a random gift to someone in your life; volunteer your time at a homeless shelter or food kitchen; Give out hugs; Literally feed your partner or friend =)
- GRATITUDE! Keep a daily gratitude journal; Give thanks to mama earth and the creatures on her for providing your food before you eat; When you say "Thank You" look the person in the eye and mean it from your heart;
- RECEIVE! Consciously accept the thank yous, gifts and offerings of others; Be aware of the processes of taking in food, chewing and digesting; When someone gives you a hug, shakes your hand or gives you a high five..Really take it in!!!!

Hi Beautiful Beings,
Happy Springtime!
As you probably noticed about 3 or 4 weeks ago nature suddenly exploded with new life. If you go for a walk in the woods, you see bright new green leaves popping out everywhere, bees and insects buzzing, frogs hopping and birds chirping (they make for an early alarm clock ey?). Spring is a time of birth, new life, new possibilities. The vision and potential of the acorn seed is following its plan and beginning to turn earth and elements into a beautiful oak tree.
As intelligent, advanced humans living technological lives, its easy to forget that we too are part of this cycle of nature. We too have the springtime energy within us. We create new life, give birth to creative projects, make plans and follow through. We have the same flexibility of a tree that finds its way towards the sun no matter what obstacles are in its path. We have the same power of a blade of grass pushing through a cement sidewalk.
In 5 element medicine the goal is to keep the energy moving through this natural cycle. When it gets stuck thats when dis-ease, pain or upset occur. When the powerful uprising spring energy (wood element) within us gets stuck we have particular experiences. For example on the physical level we may feel like our tendons and muscles are tight, we may get one-sided headaches or migraines, vision problems or trouble sleeping. We may get angry or frustrated. On a spirit level we may lack vision, flexibility, or creativity.
When in balance the springtime energy within brings us the gifts of gifts of planning, decision making, clear perception, creativity, appropriate anger, justice, vision and flexibility.
If your springtime energy or wood element if feeling stuck here are a couple exercises that can help!
- Shout! find a safe space (maybe your car) where you can shout from your belly for 3 minutes. Let all your frustrations and anger out until you are exhausted or laughing.
- Stretch! do some yoga, bend your body... loosen your muscles and tendons. Body twists like cat stretch are perfect to open up the wood element meridians of the Liver and Gallbladder
- Create! even if you are not inspired, just start a creative project. write, draw, dance, sing, paint, make me a present =)

Hi Beautiful Beings,
Happy Wintertime!
Bulbs and seeds are beneath the earth in their dormant cycle waiting for the springtime.
According to Chinese medicine, these cold months of winter are the perfect time to recharge your battery and generate vital energy - Qi - in order to live, look, and feel your best.
The ancient Chinese believed that human beings should live in harmony with the natural cycles of their environment. The cold and darkness of winter urges us to slow down. This is the time of year to reflect on health, replenish energy and conserve strength.
Winter is ruled by the Water element, which is associated with the Kidneys, Bladder and Adrenal Glands. The Kidneys are considered the source of all energy or "Qi" within the body. They store all of the reserve Qi in the body so that it can be used in times of stress and change, or to heal, prevent illness, and age gracefully.
During the winter months it is important to nurture and nourish our Kidney Qi. It is the time where this energy can be most easily depleted. Our bodies are instinctively expressing the fundamental principles of winter - rest, reflection, conservation and storage.
The Nei Ching, an ancient Chinese classic, advises people to go to sleep early and rise late, after the sun's rays have warmed the atmosphere a bit. This preserves your own Yang Qi for the task of warming in the face of cold.
Eating warm hearty soups, whole grains, and roasted nuts help to warm the body's core and to keep us nourished. Sleep early, rest well, stay warm, and expend a minimum quantity of energy.
Seasonal acupuncture treatments in winter serve to nurture and nourish kidney Qi which can greatly enhance the body's ability to thrive in times of stress, aid in healing, prevent illness and increase vitality. Click here to schedule your seasonal tune-up or Call Lance at (610) 203-3747.
Here are some dietary suggestions that can lead to an increase in vitality and radiant health.
Water - The Kidneys are associated with the Water element. Drink plenty of water, at room temperature, throughout the day.
Kidney Shaped Foods - Black beans and kidney beans are excellent examples of kidney shaped foods that nourish and benefit Kidney Qi.
Blue and Black Foods - The colors blue and black correspond to the Water element of the Kidneys and are thought to strengthen the Water element. Include blueberries, blackberries, mulberry and black beans in your diet.
Seeds - Flax, pumpkin, sunflower and black sesame seeds relate to fertility and growth which is governed by Kidney Qi.
Nuts - Walnuts and chestnuts have been found to be especially effective for increasing Kidney Qi.
Vegetables - Dark, leafy green vegetables are the best choice for Kidney Qi. Other Kidney Qi boosting veggies include asparagus, cucumbers and celery
I thought you may enjoy learning about some other amazing practitioners in the area. I asked each of them to write a little blurb below about the work they do. I hope you find it interesting and if you need any of their magic feel free to give them a ring!
Wishing you a happy, heathly and wonderful holiday and new year!
Lots of love,
Lance

Chiropractics with Dr. Jen Hartmann
When do I really Need a Chiropractor? First and foremost, pain is a motivator! Chiropractors are the first line of defense in alleviating musculoskeletal pain, (think of how your back feels after the first winter snow fall). There are muscles in the low back that can refer pain to your spine which creates pain. This is an example of musculoskeletal pain. A proper manipulation to the body releases endorphins and enkephalins, the body's natural pain killers. So, instead of reaching for the heating pad and the ibuprofen seek out a qualified chiropractor to help decrease your pain and get you back on track more quickly.

Quick Acupuncture Facts
by Lance David Isakov
Licensed Five Element Acupuncturist and Yoga Teacher

What is Acupuncture?
The Short Answer... Acupuncture is one of the oldest forms of medicine known, dating back more than 3000 years. An amazing fact is that today, one third of the world's population use acupuncture as their primary source of healthcare. I feel this is a strong testament to acupuncture's effectiveness. Acupuncture is a complete healing art, including both diagnosis and treatment, based on laws and principles that come from nature. Acupuncture in Philadelphia and on the Philadelphia mainline is becoming a popular alternative and complimentary medicine as people are experiencing the benefits.
How Does Acupuncture Work?
Have you ever listened to your favorite kind of music on a static filled radio station? Acupuncture does to you, what fine tuning with the dial does to the reception on the radio. Acupuncture tunes in your signal, so that it comes in and goes out with a crystal clarity. Acupuncture works by assisting you in creating harmony with the cycles and rhythms of nature through balancing Qi (Chee). Qi or life force energy flows through channels or meridians in each of us, just as water flows through streams or rivers on earth. Fine, solid, hair-thin needles are placed in the skin resulting in the movement of Qi along the meridians. Like clearing away tree limbs and boulders from a turbulent or stagnant river assists in the smooth flow of water, clearing blocks or imbalances in the meridians assists in the smooth flow of Qi. When Qi is abundant and flowing, you may experience balance, harmony and wellness in your body, mind and spirit. When Qi is turbulent, or blocks are present, the natural cycles may be disrupted creating an imbalance which may eventually lead to pain or dis-ease. Acupuncture treats the underlying imbalance which in turn may relieve the symptoms or signals of that imbalance.
The Benefits of Acupuncture
The World Health Organization and the National Institute of Health have declared acupuncture to be suitable for treating a wide range of health concerns. The following are some of these concerns: Digestive: Abdominal pain, Constipation, Diarrhea, Indigestion Emotional: Anxiety, Depression, Insomnia, Nervousness, Neurosis Eye, ear, nose & throat: Cataracts, Poor vision, Toothache, Gingivitis, Tinnitus Gynacological: Premenstrual syndrome, Menopausal symptoms, Infertility Musulo-Skelotal: Arthritis, Back pain, Neck pain, Muscle pain, Muscle weakness, Muscle cramping, Sciatica Neurological: Headaches, Migraines, Neurogenic bladder dysfunction, Parkinson's disease, Post-operative pain, Stroke Respiratory: Asthma Bronchitis, Common cold Sinusitis, Smoking cessation, Tonsillitis Other: Addiction control, Athletic performance, Blood pressure regulation, Chronic fatigue, Immune system toning, Stress reduction According to a nationwide survey of acupuncture users by Claire M. Cassidy, Ph.D. : 91.5% reported "disappearance" or "improvement" of symptoms after acupuncture treatment. 84% said they see their MDs less. 79% said they use fewer prescription drugs. 70% of those to whom surgery had been recommended said they avoided it. Many people in Philadelphia also use acupuncture for health maintenance and preventative care, as well as a tool for personal and spiritual growth. In my experience, acupuncture can bring a deep sense of peace and well being. It cultivates our innate healing capability that is our birth right. It awakens our senses and allows us to come to life more fully. It offers the possibility of a deep healing transformation on a mind, body and spirit level!
Acupuncture Needles
This is probably the most frequently asked question! Does it hurt? Surprisingly the style of acupuncture we practice is very gentle. The Acupuncture needles are extremely fine, approximately the thickness of two hairs. We use only sterilized, pre-packaged acupuncture needles that are disposed of after each use. Every individual has a unique interpretation of what the movement of qi by the acupuncture needles feels like. Some common sensations are tingling, heat, electricity, or tickling. Most Acupuncture patients report little or no discomfort. Generally only two to six acupuncture needles are used during each acupuncture treatment. For those who decide that the acupuncture needles are not for them, I gladly offer Plant Spirit Medicine and Acupressure as an alternative. Plant Spirit Medicine calls upon the power of plants to bring deep wholeness to our body mind and spirit. Acupressure works by stimulating the accupunture points with finger pressure rather than with the acupuncture needle.
Frequently Asked Questions about Acupuncture
What happens during an acupuncture treatment? Your first acupuncture session can last up to two hours, during which time you have the opportunity to speak at length about your health concerns, questions and goals. I will talk with you about your medical and social history and perform a physical exam, and in some cases, an acupuncture treatment. This Traditional Chinese medical exam is to evaluate the balance of energy in your body and provides me with information necessary to treat you safely and appropriately. The exam is different from a physical done by a doctor. The first and subsequent acupuncture visits will involve the insertion of acupuncture needles often accompanied with the use of an herb called Moxa. Moxa is used on the skin to warm the acupuncture points and nourish the body's energy (known as qi). I will select an acupuncture treatment for the day based on your concerns, goals and pulse readings. Please allow approximately one hour for each of these treatments. How often do I get acupuncture treatments? Initially you will be seen weekly in order to establish a comfortable harmony, which can sustain itself between acupuncture treatments. Once this happens, usually after six to eight weeks, acupuncture treatments will be spaced out to every other week, once a month, or longer. All visits are strictly confidential. How does billing work? Please pay at the time of your visit. I accept cash and personal checks.. Note: Please feel free to discuss any financial concerns with me prior to or during your first acupuncture visit. Regarding insurance - Upon your request I can provide acupuncture receipts which you can send to your insurance company for reimbursement. Please ask me for the details.

I enrolled in the Tai Sophia Institute's three year Masters of Acupuncture Program after coming to know the Beauty and Power of Five Element Acupuncture through my own treatments. Everyday, with each of my patients, I am in awe of the transformation that acupuncture brings. This has created a Passion for me in passing this healing possibility to as many people as I can! When I read the book 'Plant Spirit Medicine' by Eliot Cowan, a Huichol Shaman, in 1999, I was immediately intrigued by the possibility of using plants to help restore balance at our deepest level. I went on to study this medicine with Eliot and feel honored to share it with my patients. I began Kundalini Yoga in the winter of 2002 and it totally changed and enhanced my life. After some extraordinarily powerful experiences with this yoga, I decided to become a teacher so that I could share this amazing technology with those in my life. I joyfully extend my classes to all people regardless, of age, flexibility, shape, or size. My hope is that this ancient technology will enhance your life so that you can enhance the lives of those in your path. Sat Nam. Along the way i have studied many further technologies and techniques for healing and wellness. I look forward to sharing them with you. On a side note: In 2009 my wife, Amy and I had an opportunity to participate in a sustainable building internship with the Earthship Biotechture Company for four months. There we studied building techniques and philosophies for creating a fully sustainable, off-the-grid home constructed of recycled materies. My wife and I plan to use these skills to create an eco-friendly, off-grid home or community in the Philadelphia area. My Promise in Life is that no matter what, wherever I am, life will show as a Spirited, Playful connection. My Purpose in Life is to live right now to my fullest! To burst and overflow with spirit, joy, compassion, outrageousness, creativity, brightness, wisdom and strength! And to be an inspiration and do whatever it takes to help others come to life most fully!!! These are my passions, this is who I am. Thank you for this opportunity to be with you! My hope is that our paths cross again. Enjoy this amazing journey, may you know the Ecstasy of Love, the Depth of Power, and the Tingling Vibrations of Life along your way!

I was born in South Africa and moved, with my family, to the States in 1986. Healing has been a passion for as long as I remember. In my younger years I wished to be a Medicine Man, a Witch Doctor. This wish eventually led me to receive a bachelors degree in Anthropology, the study of human cultures, from the University of Pittsburgh. While in Pittsburgh, I had the opportunity to study Meditation, Qi Gong and various forms of healing. I began teaching Reiki, a form of energetic healing, in 1996 and continue to teach it and other forms of healing to this day. Through the years I have had the privilege of being a practitioner to thousands of people. I have a passion for experiencing new cultures, people and the intense diversity of our amazing world.
